On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed all First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against comedian Samay Raina and others. The FIRs were related to allegedly insensitive comments made about individuals with disabilities during the comedy show ‘India’s Got Latent.’ This ruling comes amid ongoing discussions about the impact of comedy on sensitive social issues.
The court passed the order after noting the accused’s compliance with its directions to conduct awareness programmes and raise funds for persons with disabilities.
The court noted their efforts and said they had taken steps in a positive direction following the controversy surrounding the show.
The order came after Raina and the other accused complied with the Supreme Court’s earlier directions to conduct awareness programmes and raise funds for persons with disabilities.
The court specifically took note of the efforts made by Raina, Goyal, Ghai, Thakkar and Tanwar to organise shows for persons with disabilities as part of the directions issued in the case. “Once there are genuine efforts, positive results are bound to be there. They are very bright youngsters. The Supreme Court’s order brings the criminal proceedings against the five comedians to an end.
The court said that proceedings against respondents 6-10, who are the accused comedians in the matter, stood closed and that the criminal proceedings against them were being quashed.
If they have started working in a positive direction, there will be positive output,” the court said.
