Rajeev Acharya, an Indian caregiver, was fatally attacked on July 23, 2026, while working for an elderly couple in their Jerusalem home. The Embassy of India in Tel Aviv confirmed the incident in a communication to Acharya’s family.
Victim Had Travelled From India To Israel For Work
For Acharya’s family, the loss is both emotional and financial. It argues that his family should not be left to bear the consequences of his death alone and has urged the relevant authorities to examine all lawful avenues for compensation, victim-support benefits and other financial assistance. For the Indian workers who have backed the appeal, Acharya’s death is more than an isolated tragedy. It has become a test of how effectively foreign workers can be protected while living and working far from home. Their message is that justice for Rajeev Acharya must go hand in hand with practical measures to ensure that other caregivers do not face similar risks while earning a livelihood and supporting their families in India.
An appeal issued on August 18 on behalf of Indian community workers in Israel, accessed by NDTV, has called for a thorough prosecution of the case, support and compensation for Acharya’s family, and stronger measures to protect foreign workers from violence and abuse. The embassy said the accused faces a charge of premeditated murder under Section 300(a) of the Israeli Penal Code and remains in custody while the legal proceedings continue.
In its communication to Acharya’s family, the Embassy of India said the investigation had progressed and an indictment had been filed against the accused. The community appeal says he had travelled thousands of kilometres from India to Israel to work and support his loved ones.
Indictment Filed Against Avior Zaken in Ongoing Case
Israeli authorities have indicted Avior Zaken, who is identified as the grandson of the elderly couple for whom Acharya worked. He is currently in custody while the case moves through the Israeli judicial system.
