Daniil Medvedev secured a place in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships on Thursday, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a score of 6-2, 6-3. The world number four showcased his strong form, wrapping up the match efficiently. Medvedev will next face either Hubert Hurkacz or Ugo Humbert in the last four.
Reflecting on his opponent, Medvedev acknowledged Davidovich Fokina’s ability to perform well, noting, “Sometimes during matches he can have a little down moment and then he goes up.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus, stating, “I knew that no matter the score, I needed to go until the last point.”
The Russian is playing in just his second tournament of the season after reaching the Australian Open final, where he suffered an agonising defeat by Jannik Sinner after leading by two sets. He powered into a 4-0 lead in the second and sealed victory on his first match point, despite a brief rally from Davidovich Fokina, who has now lost all four of his meetings with Medvedev.
Medvedev Battles Illness Ahead of Next Match
Daniil Medvedev has revealed that he was potentially battling an illness during his recent match against Lorenzo Sonego, where he had to come back from a set down to win. Medvedev mentioned, “I don’t know what happened yesterday. A few people around me got a small virus, so maybe it is this.” His health concerns add an extra layer of challenge as he prepares for his upcoming matches.
