The Delhi High Court on Thursday questioned the Centre for its failure to respond, even after a year, to a petition seeking recognition of same-sex couples as medical representatives during medical treatment.
Court Calls for Rule Changes on Same-Sex Live-In Relationships
The court has emphasized the need for authorities to revise regulations governing live-in relationships involving same-sex partners. This statement comes as the court continues to seek responses from the Centre and the National Medical Commission (NMC), following a notice issued in July 2025.
During a recent hearing, the court questioned why the authorities have yet to provide their replies, stating, “You need to tell me what your stand is. This fight is what for?”
The government’s counsel requested additional time to gather instructions, citing his recent appointment. Meanwhile, the petitioner highlighted the urgent necessity for legal recognition of such unions, particularly in medical scenarios. She noted that her partner’s family resides in various states and countries, which could hinder access during medical emergencies.
