Indian authorities removed queue management barriers and unauthorised structures outside the Pakistan high commission in a tit-for-tat action following the removal of certain structures outside the Indian mission in Islamabad, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.
Demolition Actions Escalate Between Indian and Pakistani High Commissions
On Wednesday, authorities used heavy machinery to demolish structures near the visa section of the Pakistan high commission in New Delhi. This action occurred just two days after similar demolition efforts by Indian authorities outside the Indian high commission, located within a high-security diplomatic enclave in Islamabad.
The demolitions follow the removal of barricades and parking poles by Islamabad authorities, which they claim is part of a road-widening project. Despite a formal protest from the Indian side, Pakistani officials proceeded with their demolition plans.
In a reciprocal move, Indian authorities dismantled a shed-like structure and queue management barriers outside the Pakistan high commission on Shantinath in Chanakyapuri. They also removed traffic bollards and barricades from the area. Pakistani officials had previously attempted to halt these actions, asserting that no further demolition would take place in the Pakistani capital.
Tensions Escalate in India-Pakistan Relations Following Terror Attack
India and Pakistan continue to engage in retaliatory measures amidst a complete breakdown in diplomatic ties. Relations have been strained since 2019, when the Indian government revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The situation worsened after a terror attack in Pahalgam last year, further deteriorating the already tense bilateral interactions.
