Chinese hackers are ramping up attacks after integrating DeepSeek and other open-source artificial intelligence models into their operations, highlighting attackers’ ability to leverage basic AI tools to hit targets abroad.
Rise in Cyber Attacks Linked to AI Utilization by State-Backed Hackers
State-affiliated cyber groups have significantly increased their attack frequency, more than doubling their efforts since they started using AI for routine tasks and developing sophisticated malware. This analysis comes from TeamT5, a Taiwanese research firm.
While researchers have noted challenges in identifying the specific AI models employed, DeepSeek’s tools are particularly popular among hackers in the region for their high performance and customization options.
Interestingly, some Chinese hackers have also sought assistance from American AI tools. According to cybersecurity firm CyCraft, a hacking software company utilized ChatGPT during an attack on a Western think tank. After breaching a computer and accessing an employee’s local Signal database, the hackers turned to the AI chatbot to help create a software module aimed at decrypting the data, as detailed in screenshots reviewed by Bloomberg News.
