Gurpreet Singh Gopi, a municipal councillor representing the Congress party, was shot dead by armed assailants in Mamdot town, Punjab. According to police reports on Saturday, the attackers pursued Gopi’s motorcycle before opening fire. The incident has raised concerns about safety and political violence in the region.
Gopi and Harpreet were travelling on a motorcycle while some of their friends were following them in a separate car. The incident has raised fresh concerns over law and order in Punjab. The alleged election dispute behind the attack is also likely to bring the issue into the political spotlight.
Police said the attackers opened fire at that car too.
Police Identify Attackers in Motorcycle Shooting Linked to Old Dispute
Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu confirmed that two individuals, Gurpreet Gopi and Harpreet, were targeted in a shooting while riding a motorcycle. The attackers pursued them in a car and opened fire, resulting in Gopi’s death.
The shooting is believed to stem from an ongoing dispute, with election-related tensions emerging as a significant factor in the investigation. SSP Sidhu stated, ‘The two parties had an old dispute. The attackers have been identified and our teams have been formed. We will arrest them as soon as possible.’
Multiple teams have been formed, and raids are being conducted at various locations as the investigation continues.
