New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to schedule an urgent hearing regarding the tenure of members of the National Green Tribunal before September 8, after a bar association said that three zonal benches may cease to function once the court-granted extension expires.
Supreme Court Advances Hearing on NGT Members’ Tenure
The Supreme Court of India has expedited the hearing concerning the tenure of certain members of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). This matter, initially scheduled for September 15, will now be addressed sooner by a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
During the proceedings, a lawyer representing the NGT Bar Association highlighted that the Supreme Court had previously extended the tenure of specific members only until September 8, raising concerns about the implications of this limited extension.
Because the NGT Act does not allow a single-member Bench, “Three benches of the NGT, including the Southern Bench and Western Zone Bench, will all have to stop functioning from September 8.
So it will completely cripple them,” the counsel said, seeking an urgent hearing.
