New Delhi is firm: The Indus Waters Treaty “in abeyance” remains in force, underscoring that The Hague Court of Arbitration, the world’s oldest permanent forum for international dispute, “has no jurisdiction on India’s sovereign decisions”.
India Rejects Court of Arbitration’s Award on Indus Waters Treaty
On Monday, the Court of Arbitration issued an award regarding Interim Measures and the status of the Indus Waters Treaty. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs firmly rejected the ruling, stating that the court was established by the World Bank in violation of the treaty’s terms.
The Ministry declared, “This so-called Court has no jurisdiction whatsoever to pronounce on India’s sovereign decisions.” It emphasized that any pronouncements from this body, now or in the future, will not impact India’s actions related to its projects. Furthermore, India reiterated that its decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty remains in effect.
