Guwahati Airport has introduced a 570-metre precision approach lighting system (PALS) to assist pilots during landings in low visibility conditions. This new system aims to provide improved visual references, enhancing overall safety for air travel in challenging weather. The official announcement was made on Tuesday, highlighting the airport’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies for safer operations.
Airport Upgrades Enhance Safety Amid Seasonal Weather Challenges
The airport has recently upgraded its landing infrastructure, extending the approach lighting from 180 metres to 570 metres. This enhancement is designed to improve flight operations during adverse weather, such as heavy monsoon rainfall and reduced visibility, which are common in the region.
The newly commissioned Precision Approach Lighting System (PALS) provides several operational advantages. It allows pilots to identify the runway environment sooner during their approach, assists in maintaining proper alignment with the runway centre-line, and strengthens the airport’s capacity to function as a vital air transport hub for the Northeast.
