New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) – The all-India retail price of sugar has decreased by 3.85% to ₹ 62.57 per kg in just one week. This decline is attributed to recent government actions, which include permitting imports and implementing stricter stockholding regulations for bulk users and dealers, as reported by official data.
Wholesale Sugar Prices Decline, Retail Impact Delayed
The wholesale price of sugar has decreased to ₹ 57.62 per kg on September 2, down from ₹ 60.39 per kg just a week earlier, according to the consumer affairs ministry.
However, this reduction in wholesale prices may not immediately translate to lower retail prices. Retailers who purchased sugar at the higher price are hesitant to sell at a loss. They will likely maintain their prices until their existing stock is depleted.
“It takes at least ten days to reflect changes in the retail price,” noted an industry source.
To check a sudden rise in sugar prices, the government took a series of measures, including allowing import of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar, and tightening of stock holding norms for bulk users and dealers.
