The search for the 5,000 individuals missing after devastating flash floods in Nepal is proving increasingly grim, according to former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. He cautioned that the death toll is anticipated to climb as rescue efforts continue. Oli emphasized that if climate change remains unaddressed, such catastrophic events could become more frequent, posing a significant threat to coastal nations. He called for ‘compensation’ from industrialized countries that contribute to global warming.
Concerns Over Glacier Instability Amid Missing Persons Search
Authorities report that very few people are currently missing following the recent flash flood, though many bodies have been discovered in Chitwan, India, and other locations. The official emphasized the challenges in locating those washed away, stating, “A large number are gone. Their bodies are being found in Chitwan, in India, and other places.”
He warned that the glacier responsible for the flood is still unstable. Only a small section of the glacier has broken away, but a significant portion remains intact and could collapse at any moment. He urged, “Everyone should be more aware and should pay more attention.”
Additionally, he asserted that Nepal has not played a role in causing environmental damage related to this incident.
He also attacked the Nepal government, claiming it has not been effectively dealing with the floods.
“Reconstruction and rehabilitation are a big challenge that we have to tackle,” he said.
