A patient currently residing in a hospital has expressed urgent needs for basic necessities. “I don’t have any household items. I don’t have a place to sleep either… I am staying at the hospital,” he stated, highlighting his precarious situation.
He elaborated on his past hardships, saying, “I had some money, food, corn, grains, cows. I lost everything.” His plea underscores the critical need for government support to help those in dire circumstances.
Inmates Reflect on Loss After Disaster
In a relief camp, male inmates expressed their devastation over the loss of their homes following a recent disaster. One inmate lamented, “It is destroyed,” when asked about his living situation. Another shared, “I got rice, food, clothes here,” but added, “But my house was just swept away.” He voiced his concern about the future, asking, “How will I make a house? I don’t have the means to make a house. I worked and ate one day at a time. I am a labourer.” These statements highlight the ongoing struggles faced by those displaced by the catastrophe.
Government Relief Efforts for Flood Victims
In response to the recent flooding, the Nepal government has initiated a relief program for affected residents. Relief cards are being issued to individuals who register with their names and addresses. These cards will allow them to receive essential supplies, including rice, lentils, blankets, bread, snacks, and water, over the next few months. Distribution of these items is taking place from a truck in the impacted areas.
Authorities have also issued a warning regarding food safety in the disaster zones. Residents are advised to handle food items with care due to the presence of bodies, flies, and insects among the debris.
