India on Sunday qualified its support for a UN General Assembly resolution on a map that shows the true size of countries by saying that the country’s sovereign territory, including Jammu and Kashmir , must be depicted in line with New Delhi’s official map.
Jaiswal noted that the UN resolution’s purpose is encouraging the use of equal-area map projections that preserve the relative sizes of continental landmasses.
The resolution on “Correct the map: Rebalancing global cartographic representation and promoting equitable representation of the world’s regions, particularly Africa”, was adopted on Friday by a vote of 164 in favour to one against (United States), and six abstentions. “India voted in favour of the resolution and also made an explanation of vote stressing on the underlying principle of promoting equal-area cartographic representation,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. “The resolution neither adopts nor authenticates any particular world map, nor does it address political cartography, including international boundaries, disputed territories or place names,” he said.
