Elephant in Assam Draws Attention with Tire Around Neck

An elephant was spotted on Thursday wandering through the forest block in Morongi, located in Assam’s Golaghat district. This area has a history of human-elephant conflicts. The elephant appeared to be foraging for food as it moved through a nearby tea garden. Photographs capturing the animal with a tire around its neck have gained significant attention online. Forest officials suspect that the tire, likely discarded from a tractor, was picked up by the elephant out of curiosity, eventually slipping over its neck.

Saikia appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid approaching or disturbing the elephant, noting that it was “already in an uncomfortable condition.

Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia said he had informed senior forest department officials about the sighting, after which a team was sent to the location. The forest department team is currently monitoring the animal and will decide on the safest method of removing the tyre once they have assessed its condition, according to officials.
