A councillor of the Aam Aadmi Party has been booked for alleged abetment of suicide after the death of an MCD sanitation worker in Delhi. His wife alleged that the money from a loan – around Rs 15 lakh – meant to buy a house was retained by the councillor. Deepak, 45, worked as an MCD sanitation worker in Blocks 1 and 2 of Trilokpuri and lived with his family in Kalyanpuri.
He died by suicide earlier this month.
Investigation Launched into Councillor Vijay Kumar Following Deepak’s Death
Councillor Vijay Kumar is under investigation following the registration of a case against him on September 14 under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of Deepak, focusing particularly on financial aspects.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed on the same day, prompting an examination of various financial documents. Authorities plan to scrutinize loan records, bank transactions, and salary details, as well as Deepak’s cheque book and related documents. Additionally, investigators will review communications between Deepak and the accused prior to his death.
Concerns Raised Over Deepak’s Distress Prior to Death
Deepak’s family has reported that key personal documents, including his identity papers, cheque book, bank passbook, and property papers, were in the possession of a local councillor, Vijay Kumar.
The day before Deepak’s death, he expressed significant distress to his wife, claiming that if anything were to happen to him, Kumar would be responsible.
According to Malhotra, Deepak had approached the councillor for assistance in securing housing for his family. He had been requesting either a house or the return of his money for several months, indicating a prolonged struggle over this matter.
