The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Gautam Buddha Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam, overturning a previous decision by the Allahabad High Court. Roopam had faced scrutiny for her involvement in the detention of a student activist under the National Security Act. This detention was linked to unrest among laborers in Noida that occurred several months ago. The Supreme Court’s decision provides significant relief to Roopam, clearing her of the accountability imposed by the lower court.
The top court also stayed the operation of the judgment that quashed Chaudhary’s detention. During the hearing, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who was representing Uttar Pradesh, and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Roopam, argued that the DM’s action came on the material placed before her after it had gone through several levels of police administration, including the Commissioner. A bench of Justices SC Sharma and NK Singh has paused the high court order directing her to pay compensation of Rs 5 lakh from her salary to the student activist, Akriti Chaudhary. 27 to 33 shall remain stayed,” the bench said in its order.
