Mudslide in Sikkim Raises Safety Concerns
A mudslide occurred in Sikkim due to heavy overnight rainfall, causing large amounts of mud, rocks, and debris to flow downhill. This situation has heightened worries among local residents, as ongoing rainfall threatens nearby houses and infrastructure.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, and no damage to other houses or vehicles has been noted. This incident is part of a series of landslide-related disruptions in the region.
Officials are advising residents to avoid active landslide zones, areas where debris has accumulated, and river streams during rainfall to ensure their safety.
Nepal has also issued warnings of heavy rainfall, with authorities cautioning about possible flooding and landslides in several parts of the country. The Nepal Meteorological Department forecast heavy and very heavy rainfall in parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while several other areas could also receive heavy rain. Authorities have warned that the rainfall could trigger flooding, inundation, soil erosion, landslides and debris flows. People have been advised to remain alert, avoid non-essential travel and stay away from areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.
Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs activated disaster-response mechanisms after weather forecasters predicted heavy rainfall across several parts of the country between September 24 and 27.
The images of landslides and rain-related damage in Sikkim are reminiscent of the much more devastating flooding and landslides that struck Nepal weeks earlier, where the scale of destruction and loss of life is incomparable.
