US President Donald Trump said Sunday that he expects talks with Iran to resume in the coming week, a day after rejecting a truce proposal put forward by Tehran.
The talks would follow indirect discussions between US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi that were held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Because “they are losing so badly, iran said Friday it had submitted a proposal to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but Trump rejected it, asserting that Iranian leaders wanted the deal. In the interview, Trump said that the largest volume of oil since the war began had transited the strait over the weekend, at more than 20 million barrels.
“They overplayed their hand,” Trump said in the Axios interview published Sunday.
The US president is considering resuming strikes on Iran after the November 3 midterm elections, as he grapples with growing public opposition to the war in the Middle East, which has sent fuel prices soaring, according to The Wall Street Journal.
