On Saturday, the Student Bar Council at NALSAR University of Law publicly criticized the Bar Council of India (BCI) for its directive that barred state bar councils from enrolling the university’s 2026 graduates as advocates. This directive has since been withdrawn, but it sparked significant concern among students and faculty regarding the implications for their future legal careers.

The elected student body also sought an apology from BCI Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra over what it described as objectionable remarks directed at students and faculty members, news agency PTI reported. The council also questioned the BCI’s direction to the NALSAR Vice-Chancellor to prepare an inquiry report.

The Student Bar Council has condemned the language used in recent letters from the Bar Council of India (BCI), which described issues at the university as “groupism” and “dirty politics.” The letters also accused faculty members of misleading and instigating students.

The Council responded, stating, “These allegations are unprofessional, unfounded, and without any substance. Making such claims against members of the University family for mere peaceful expression of legitimate dissent is uncalled for and reeks of malice.”
