A recent satellite-tracking study has identified the migration patterns of the critically endangered Lesser Florican, the smallest bustard species in the world. This bird traverses a migration flyway covering approximately 206,000 square kilometers across western and central India.

Despite its extensive journey, the Lesser Florican remains heavily reliant on grassland habitats, even as it navigates through agricultural areas and other open environments. This finding highlights the species’ dependence on specific ecosystems for survival during migration.

“By linking fine-scale movement behaviour with landscape-scale patterns of land-use change and population decline, this study reinforces a central conclusion: the Lesser florican remains fundamentally a grassland specialist whose persistence is significantly constrained by the amount, configuration, and quality of remaining grassland habitat. The study found that grassland was the most selected habitat during both the breeding season, June to September, and the non-breeding season.
