A significant protest occurred at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Friday, organized by the ‘Reservation Hatao Andolan,’ a movement opposing reservation quotas. Despite being granted permission to hold the demonstration at Ramlila Maidan, the large turnout at Jantar Mantar prompted police action, leading to the detention of several participants as tensions escalated.
Delhi Police asked protesters to shift to Ramlila Maidan
The protesters were detained by the Delhi Police on Friday after the police denied permission to hold any form of protest in and around Jantar Mantar in the national capital. Police personnel and paramilitary forces were deployed at key points in the area ahead of the protest, while barricades were put up to regulate the movement of people towards Jantar Mantar.
The NOC allowed a maximum of 500 people to gather at Ramlila Maidan until 4 pm.
The Delhi Police said no permission had been granted for any protest, procession, demonstration or assembly at Jantar Mantar. However, a no-objection certificate (NOC) was issued for a peaceful protest under the banner of “Reservation Hatao Andolan” at Ramlila Maidan on Friday, according to an official communication from the office of the Central District DCP. Police said they had “no objection” to the protest at Ramlila Maidan from a law-and-order point of view.
