On Tuesday, the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) CoBRA unit carried out house-to-house searches in Taphou village, located in the Senapati district of Manipur. This operation followed a gunfight that resulted in injuries to one CRPF jawan.
No arrests or detentions were reported during the searches.
District police personnel and the CoBRA team carried out the search and combing operation in Taphou Naga Liangmai village and Taphou Kuki village during the early hours of Tuesday, officials said. Officials said the operation was carried out without resistance from residents.
Tensions Rise Amid Community Violence in Noney and Kangpokpi
A CRPF jawan was injured in a foot during a gunfight with unidentified armed individuals in Noney district. This incident occurred after two houses, one belonging to a Kuki family and the other to the Poumai community, were set ablaze by an unknown group, heightening tensions in the area.
The conflict between the Kuki and Naga communities has intensified following a deadly ambush on May 13, where four individuals, including three church leaders and one Naga man, were killed in Noney and Kangpokpi districts. The ongoing violence reflects deep-rooted community divisions and poses significant challenges for local authorities.
The case has been under investigation by National Investigating Agency (NIA) and as a part of the investigation four individuals including a couple have been arrested in the month of July on two separate occasions. The ethnic clashes in Manipur began between the Meitei and Kuki communities before involving almost every community. The state’s Meitei and the Kuki-Zo communities shut each other out from the areas they dominate since ethnic clashes began in May 2023 and left at least 260 people dead and displaced 60,000.
