Maharashtra BJP MLA Parag Shah, one of the state’s wealthiest legislators, spent a day on the streets of Mumbai dressed as a beggar, leaving behind his security detail, cars and expensive belongings for the unusual exercise.
Mumbai MLA’s Humble Experience Goes Viral
Ghatkopar (East) MLA Shah recently garnered attention after a video surfaced of him seeking alms and accepting food while sitting by the roadside. The footage, which quickly went viral on social media, initially caught viewers off guard until the context was revealed.
Shah, a former businessman, undertook this experience on the recommendation of his Jain spiritual guru, Namramuni, during a significant month in the Jain calendar, according to news agency PTI.
Reflecting on the experience, Shah noted it provided insight into human behavior when social status is concealed. He emphasized the generosity of the people in Mumbai, recounting an interaction with a samosa seller who continued to assist him despite his lack of funds. “When I told the samosa seller that I did not have money, he still gave me the samosa with a smile. The man was very small, a poor hawker, but without making a face even once, he gave me the samosa,” Shah shared.
