Sahil Wakode, a second-year Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay student of the Energy Science and Engineering department died by suicide on Friday evening after he was caught using a mobile during an exam.
“The reason for our protest is that a suicide took place in our college today. Howeve, the student claimed that the student accused of cheating had allegedly been threatened with a one-year suspension.
The officials said that no disciplinary action was initiated against the student. They said that if suspended, the student would have had to vacate the hostel and live outside the campus. That is why we have gathered to protest-to demand accountability, transparency, and answers from our administration,” a student said.
Tragic Death of IIT Bombay Student After Exam Incident
A second-year student from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay died by suicide on Friday evening. Earlier that day, during an examination, he was discovered using a mobile phone to upload the exam question paper to ChatGPT in an attempt to find answers.
Despite the incident, no disciplinary action was taken against the student. Faculty, including the instructor and the Head of the Department, met with him to provide counseling and assured him that the situation would not negatively impact his academic career. Following this discussion, the student returned to his hostel room.
Later in the evening, he was found dead in his room. The institute expressed deep sadness over the loss and is offering support to the student’s friends, classmates, and faculty. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
