A weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen into a deep depression, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This system is projected to move towards the eastern coast of India, with Odisha and Andhra Pradesh likely to experience significant impacts.
Odisha Braces for Severe Weather Conditions
Heavy rainfall has already been reported across several areas in Odisha, which is expected to be one of the worst-affected states due to an intensifying weather system. In response, authorities in various districts are shutting down schools and preparing for potential flooding and other weather-related incidents.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that this weather system may develop into a deep depression, though it will not escalate into a cyclone. The chief secretary confirmed that the government has mobilized personnel to manage the anticipated extremely heavy rainfall.
Warnings of squally weather and strong winds have been issued for the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts, with wind gusts reaching up to 75 km/h expected between the morning of September 23 and the evening of September 24.
The system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds to parts of the two states as it moves west-northwestwards. The IMD has issued a red alert for parts of southern Odisha. However, the IMD has currently forecast that the system will intensify into a deep depression, rather than a cyclone.
Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain possible at isolated places on September 23-24. Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri are under red alert for September 24-25.
Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg also said the weather office had informed the state government that the system was not expected to become a cyclone.
