The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has implemented new regulations requiring smartphone screen protectors to be registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This decision, outlined in a notification dated September 21, aims to curb the sale of substandard screen protectors, also referred to as screen guards or tempered glass. By including these accessories in the compulsory registration framework, the government seeks to ensure that consumers are protected from low-quality mobile accessories.
This particular benchmark will regulate key features like glass strength, thickness, scratch resistance, adhesives, and special coatings. The government notification simply means that all manufacturers and importers selling glass screen guards in India must get their products tested and certified as per the benchmark IS 19348:2025 .
