Bank customers will have an additional day to conduct urgent transactions before a three-day nationwide bank strike starts on September 28. With banks already scheduled to be closed on September 26 (fourth Saturday) and September 27 (Sunday), the strike could have resulted in five consecutive days of disruption. To mitigate this, the Finance Ministry announced that all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will operate on Sunday, September 27.
RBI Approves Banking Operations Ahead of Strike
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has authorized the operation of bank branches, ATM-linked branches, and currency chests on the upcoming Sunday. This decision allows customers to complete essential banking tasks before a proposed strike.
The government has emphasized that the welfare and convenience of bank customers is a top priority. In a recent statement, officials urged unions to postpone the planned strike and have implemented measures to ensure that essential banking services continue without interruption.
The strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents 90% of the banking workforce, is primarily advocating for a five-day banking week along with other demands.
“Responding to the appeal made by the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), Bank managements to defer the strike, we informed them that if there is any concrete and positive development towards implementation of our demand for introduction of 5 days banking, UFBU will consider the same,” UFBU said in a statement after the meeting.
