A class 1 student of Mitra Institution in the Bhabanipur area in the southern part of the city was allegedly bitten by a snake at around 8.30 am on Monday during a tiffin break at school, officials said.

Drupto Pal, a child from Tollygunge, was taken to SSKM Hospital by authorities from his government-run school. He is currently under observation following the incident.

A recent snakebite incident at a government-run school has raised alarms, marking the second such occurrence involving schoolchildren in just a week. This latest event took place shortly after a Class 3 girl was bitten at The Heritage School on August 18.
Following the incident in Bhawanipore, the state forest department conducted a thorough search of the school premises. Officials inspected classrooms and reviewed CCTV footage but did not find any snakes. In response to the situation, school authorities opted to close the institution early while inspections were underway.
The earlier incident, which involved a Class 3 student at a prominent private school, resulted in hospitalization. These two events have heightened concerns regarding student safety in local schools.
