India achieved its highest-ever performance at the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), securing nine medals at the 19th edition held in Turin, Italy. The four-member Indian team showcased exceptional talent and dedication, contributing to this remarkable success on an international stage.
The Indian team comprised Saumik Mandal, Aaron Maiti, Riddhi Ranjan and Md Ehtesham Rizwi. The students had undergone a three-week training and selection programme at the Department of Geology, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda before being selected for the international competition. The International Earth Science Olympiad gives school students an opportunity to compete in areas related to Earth sciences. The competition involves subjects and activities linked to geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography and environmental science. The achievement adds another strong performance by Indian school students on the international science Olympiad stage.
India’s selection process includes a national entrance test, a training camp and the Indian National Earth Science Olympiad before the final team is chosen.
Indian Students Achieve Success in International Competitions
Four Indian students have made headlines by winning a total of nine medals in various competitions, including the written and practical examinations, the International Team Field Investigation, and the Earth Science Project competitions. This achievement marks a notable improvement from India’s performance in 2025, where the country secured seven medals.
The students were selected out of approximately 17,000 participants during a rigorous national selection process. Following their selection, they underwent an intensive training program at the university from May 20 to June 11, 2026.
