In response to a concerning trend, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has established a 10-member

In response to a concerning trend, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has established a 10-member core group of senior officers dedicated to preventing self-harm among its personnel. This initiative comes after the CRPF recorded 59 suicides in 2025, marking the highest number in five years. The formation of this team underscores the urgent need to address mental health issues within the country’s largest paramilitary force.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on August 14 said it has taken suo motu cognisance of these reports and issued a notice to the Union home secretary and CRPF DG calling for a “detailed report” on the matter within two weeks.

A senior commanding officer said issues like perpetual troop deployment, separation from family and work-life balance are some of the “root causes” that need to be confronted when seeking solutions against suicides.

New Core Group to Address Self-Harm Cases

A newly formed core group has been established to investigate self-harm incidents within the community. Officials announced that this group will conduct objective examinations of each case and propose necessary preventive measures, including welfare, administrative, and medical interventions to mitigate future occurrences.

Reporting heads and supervisory officers are required to provide detailed analyses of incidents under their supervision to the core group, ensuring a comprehensive review process.
