The BJP has agreed to move ahead with the implementation of the March 2024 Tripartite Agreement, including steps on indigenous land rights, paving the way for an electoral understanding with the TIPRA Motha Party and IPFT for the upcoming TTAADC Village Committee elections, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said in Agartala after returning from Delhi.
Saha had rushed to the national capital, where he held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. The development assumes significance since Pradyot Debbarma had repeatedly maintained that implementation of the Tripartite Agreement, particularly the protection of indigenous land rights, was central to any electoral understanding with the BJP.
He described the talks as “fruitful and constructive” and said the three NDA partners would contest the September 28 Village Committee elections together.
Tripura Agreement to Protect Indigenous Rights Signed
On March 2, 2024, an agreement was reached involving the Centre, the Tripura government, TIPRA Motha, and various stakeholders. This pact focuses on addressing key issues faced by indigenous communities, including land and political rights, economic development, and the preservation of identity, culture, and language. A Joint Working Committee will be established to ensure the timely implementation of the measures outlined in the agreement.
Implementation of Tripartite Agreement to Begin Next Month
The Centre has confirmed that the implementation of the Tripartite Agreement with TIPRA Motha will proceed in phases, starting with measures related to land rights expected to launch next month. This process will take place within the constitutional framework, particularly under the Sixth Schedule.
Saha emphasized that the agreement’s implementation will be time-bound and aims to protect the sentiments and interests of all communities involved. This initiative marks a significant test for the evolving political relationship between the BJP and TIPRA Motha, especially since TIPRA Motha prioritizes the protection of indigenous rights as a key aspect of its political agenda.
