The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) announced the detection of one spurious drug and 220 samples deemed not of standard quality (NSQ) during its random testing conducted in August. This information was made public in the NSQ and Spurious Drug Alert issued by the regulator on Tuesday.
NSQ drugs are those that fail to meet quality standards or specifications, including those pertaining to labelling, dissolution, weight uniformity, and sterility. Besides NSQs, some quality-related defective products are also categorised as adulterated or spurious drugs, which are considered to have the potential to cause serious adverse reactions and even death.
Investigation into Spurious Drug Manufacturing Underway
Authorities are investigating the production of a counterfeit drug allegedly made by unauthorized manufacturers using a brand name owned by a legitimate company. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that actions will be taken in accordance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and relevant regulations. The CDSCO stated, “The matter concerning the spurious drug identified in Delhi remains under investigation, and further action will be taken in accordance with the applicable Act and Rules.”
