Dubbing the reports of director Prof Shireesh Kedare as fake news, the institute posted that the director has not resigned. Embroiled in student protests over the past few days due to death by suicide of a second-year student, IIT Bombay on Monday denied reports that its director has resigned.
The campus has been witnessing student protests since the death of Sahil Wakode on Friday evening.
His family has alleged that Wakode, a native of Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district, was subjected to institutional harassment and caste-based discrimination before he took the extreme step, which triggered a protest by students on the campus. The protesters claimed that Wakode faced severe pressure and threats of academic suspension.
IIT Bombay Administration Engages with Protesting Students
The administration of IIT Bombay met with protesting students on Sunday night to address their 18 demands. Key issues raised included the need for student representation on academic committees, an independent investigation into four recent student suicides, and the implementation of mental health workshops for faculty. The students also called for the suspension of Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, the Dean of Students Welfare, while seeking no punitive measures against the protesters.
