Mandeep K Bhandari, a senior IAS officer, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This decision follows a bureaucratic reshuffle conducted by the Centre on Friday. Bhandari’s appointment marks a significant change in leadership for the organization responsible for overseeing secondary education in India.
The CBSE had started a probe into the procurement of services for the board’s controversial, glitch-prone platform. The 2001-batch IAS officer is currently posted as Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. The move comes months after CBSE witnessed massive uproar of allegations of irregularities in the rollout of the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system used to assess Class 12 answer scripts. On June 2, then CBSE chairman Rahul Singh and secretary Himanshu Gupta were transferred out of the Board, and Prashant Lokhande was appointed as the new CBSE chairperson.
Bhandari’s appointment as the CBSE chairperson was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, according to an order issued by the ministry of personnel.
