Public sector banks and regional rural banks will operate normally today. This decision comes as the government aims to maintain uninterrupted banking services ahead of a planned three-day nationwide strike starting Wednesday. The government is taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the strike on essential services.
Bank Operations to Continue Amid Upcoming Strike
The Ministry of Finance has announced that all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches, and currency chests will remain operational on September 27. This decision comes in response to the strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) that follows the weekend holidays. The Reserve Bank of India has approved these measures to ensure that banking services are unaffected during this period.
The government and bank managements had on Tuesday also appealed to the unions to resolve their remaining demands through dialogue, while taking steps to ensure essential banking services continue without interruption. However, the demand for a five-day workweek is still under examination. The government earlier pointed out that the proposed strike coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on September 30.
“The welfare and convenience of bank customers remains the Government’s foremost priority,” it said, while appealing to bank unions to defer the proposed strike. The government said it has already decided to keep the PLI scheme in abeyance following discussions with the unions.
