The government has officially implemented the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026. This regulation designates Indian Standard Time (IST) as the sole reference for all legal, administrative, commercial, and official activities throughout the country. The move aims to standardize timekeeping practices across various sectors, ensuring consistency in operations and communications.
New National Time Standard to Enhance Coordination Across Sectors
The consumer affairs ministry has announced new rules establishing a uniform national time standard, set to take effect 180 days after their publication in the official gazette on August 27. This timeline allows government departments, businesses, and institutions to adjust their systems accordingly.
Currently, discrepancies between various time sources can hinder effective coordination and accurate record-keeping across multiple sectors. The ministry emphasized that a standardized time reference will facilitate precise time-stamping for banking and digital payments, improve coordination among transport networks like railways and airports, and ensure the reliable operation of telecommunication and internet services.
Moreover, this initiative aims to enhance time-keeping in power systems, maintain government and legal records accurately, and streamline coordination for emergency and time-sensitive services, according to the ministry’s statement.
The government is building infrastructure to disseminate accurate IST through Indian institutions and legal metrology laboratories. The rules also enable the use of NavIC, India’s indigenous satellite navigation system, along with other approved Indian timing sources, for secure and reliable time dissemination. In a related demonstration, the ministry, in collaboration with CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, Isro, Sebi, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSNL, showed secure transmission of IST between RRSL Bengaluru, and NSE Chennai.
As part of the ‘One Nation, One Time’ initiative, the ministry in July 2026 commissioned a White Rabbit Technology-based IST Dissemination Demonstration Network at the Regional Reference Standard Laboratory (RRSL) in Bengaluru. The ministry said the 180-day transition period would allow stakeholders to review existing systems, carry out necessary technical upgrades, and prepare for full implementation before the Rules take effect.
