The 45-year-old also threw his support behind club captain Bruno Fernandes. The Portugal midfielder was left on the bench during Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth following his criticism of Carrick’s tactics after United’s 4-1 loss to Como.
Under-pressure Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said he was “here to do my job” and insisted he needed “no assurances” regarding his future at Old Trafford. Despite mounting criticism over United’s poor run of form, Carrick said he was not surprised to still be in charge after a disappointing sequence of results.
“That’s it. Bruno is fully committed to this football club. I’ve got no issues with that, and we move forward. Carrick was handed a two-year contract in May after overseeing a revival as caretaker manager, guiding United to a third-place Premier League finish and a return to the Champions League after a difficult spell under Ruben Amorim.
The 20-time English champions have won only two of their 12 matches across all competitions this season, while their return of seven points from eight league games represents the club’s worst start to a league campaign in 40 years. United’s continued struggles have prolonged the club’s wait for another Premier League title, with their last league triumph coming under Sir Alex Ferguson 13 years ago.
Addressing Fernandes’ situation, Carrick said the midfielder’s omission against Bournemouth was purely a tactical decision. We’re looking forward to the game at the weekend now,” he said.
The defeat to Bournemouth left United just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
“He’s the one that’s kind of led the team so well for many games and many years, and he’ll continue to do that,” Carrick told reporters on Thursday.
