US ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Tuesday backed President Donald Trump’s push for mandatory voter

US ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Tuesday backed President Donald Trump’s push for mandatory voter identification in America, citing India’s election system as an example.

“The President (US President Donald Trump) was very clear, and what India does, having a voter ID law, is something that we should pass in the United States,” Gor said on the sidelines of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce National Convention 2026.

Earlier reporting noted: ‘What MAGA really cares about…’: Ishaan Tharoor jibe at Trump’s India voter ID pitch American journalist Ishaan Tharoor on Tuesday pushed back against US President Donald Trump’s use of India’s voter identification system as an example for the US, saying that while it is easy to get a voter ID in India, what the MAGA movement actually cares about is how the government managed to remove millions of people from electoral rolls. Gor’s latest remarks came hours after Trump cited India’s electoral system and chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar while renewing his call for Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. Trump is absolutely correct! Congress should pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT! We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he wrote on Truth Social.

646 MILLION voters, every single one required an ID in India’s last election. India’s last Election had 646,000,000 Voters! Less than 1% voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID Photo Identity Document.

Trump said Kumar recently asked the US administration how elections could be conducted without a valid photo ID. Trump also spoke of India’s large electorate and voter identification requirements and said that the US should adopt stricter rules. Earlier reporting noted: Tharoor was responding to a Truth Social post by the US President, in which Trump shared details of a conversation his administration had with chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who, according to Trump, asked how the US could have elections without requiring voter ID cards.

Gor earlier backed Trump’s post: “President Donald J. Earlier reporting noted: “Earlier this month, India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration — How can you have Elections in the U.S. without a valid Photo ID?

I think it’s vitally important. Voter ID is important. “You had over 660 million people vote, by the way, less than 1 per cent by mail.

It’s not a partisan issue, and so the President is absolutely right that the United States should have a voter ID requirement when people show up to vote,” he told news agency ANI.
