Himanta Sarma Urges Assam Settlers To List Assamese As Mother Tongue During Census

On Saturday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, called on residents of the state who are originally from other regions to declare ‘Assamese’ as their mother tongue during the ongoing Census data collection. This appeal aims to ensure a more accurate representation of the state’s linguistic demographics.

Sarma Urges Community Participation in Census Process

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on the people of Barak Valley, known for its predominantly Bengali-speaking population, and local tribal communities to identify their mother tongue during the ongoing Census process. Sarma emphasized the importance of the year 2026, stating that the data collected will shape the future of the country. He urged citizens to engage actively in the Census, highlighting their duty to ensure its success. This appeal comes amid concerns over a potential decline in Assamese speakers, as observed in previous enumeration efforts. Sarma made these remarks while addressing the 80th Independence Day celebrations at Khanapara.
