During his speech at the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This endorsement highlights Russia’s commitment to India’s role in global governance and reflects ongoing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Russia Advocates for Expanded UN Security Council Representation
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia’s support for increased representation of countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America in the UN Security Council. He specifically endorsed the candidacies of India and Brazil for permanent seats.
Lavrov emphasized that any reform of the Security Council must maintain the rights of current permanent members and must not allow for additional seats for Western nations. He particularly criticized the prospect of new seats for countries like Germany and Japan, citing concerns over their militaristic and revanchist tendencies.
“We are in favour of broadening the representation of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. We support Brazil’s and India’s candidatures for a permanent seat,” Lavrov stated. He further remarked, “UN Security Council reform cannot involve any additional seats being allocated to Western countries, especially to Germany and Japan,” according to the news agency ANI.
