A 32-year-old woman allegedly ended her life over the weekend in Nagpur during a live video call with her long-time partner, who watched and kept it connected for 23 minutes after her death, police said on Wednesday.
Allegations of Exploitation in Maharashtra Relationship
A woman who had been in a relationship since 2015 reportedly died after being physically exploited by her partner, who had allegedly promised marriage. Following her death, the call she was on remained connected for approximately 23 minutes, during which the accused made no attempt to intervene or assist her.
Sainath Ramod, an officer with the Maharashtra Police, confirmed that a case has been registered based on the woman’s mother’s complaint. A police team is being dispatched to Pune to apprehend the accused for questioning.
Police said the woman made the desperate video call to her partner on Sunday, warning him that she was going to end her life. They added that the woman was also from Amravati. But the man’s family opposed the marriage even as he concealed their disapproval and continued meeting the woman in Nagpur before refusing to marry her. The woman continued to press him to honour his commitment. In her complaint, the mother alleged that the partner resorted to blackmail, threatening to leak her intimate photographs on social media if she persisted.
Investigators said the 34-year-old partner, who is from Amravati and pursuing a PhD in Pune, was booked for abetment to suicide. She worked for a private firm in Nagpur since December 2025 and lived with a friend. Police said the 34-year-old visited the woman’s mother with a marriage proposal.
