Two UN peacekeepers from Ethiopia were killed and seven other people injured in an ambush on Monday in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, bringing to nine the number of peacekeepers killed in the line of duty worldwide this year, the United Nations said.
UN Calls for Investigation After Attack Injures Peacekeepers and Police
Three UN peacekeepers, two police officers from South Sudan, and two civilian staff members were among those injured in a recent attack, according to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. He emphasized the need for a thorough and prompt investigation to hold those responsible accountable. Dujarric noted that such attacks on UN peacekeepers could be classified as war crimes under international law.
This incident follows a previous report indicating that two peacekeepers were killed, and seven others were injured during the same attack. The UN has condemned the violence and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of its personnel.
