The Trump administration has announced significant changes to energy regulations during a G20 energy ministers’ meeting in Houston. These changes reverse measures implemented by former President Joe Biden and propose halting future regulations affecting the power sector, which is responsible for about a quarter of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin criticized the previous administrations, stating, “For over 15 years, the Obama and Biden administrations implemented a war on coal to destroy reliable and affordable energy.” He emphasized the current administration’s commitment to protecting American energy and ensuring affordability for consumers, saying, “The Trump Administration has come in to protect American energy and to make sure you can afford to keep the lights on.”
In response to these changes, environmental groups have pledged to file lawsuits, calling it a setback for climate policies and a boon to the fossil fuel industry. The administration’s actions include the repeal of 2024 Biden-era standards established under the Clean Air Act aimed at controlling greenhouse gas emissions from existing coal plants and new gas plants.
It builds on the government’s decision in February to overturn the 2009 Endangerment Finding, the scientific determination that greenhouse gases threaten public health and welfare.
