Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stated she is prepared for imprisonment but remains determined to return home by December. In a phone interview with NDTV, she dismissed a recent death sentence order against her as “politically motivated.” Hasina also expressed her intention to play a pivotal role in revitalizing the Awami League party.
Political Leader Vows to Return Despite Risks
A prominent political figure has expressed her determination to return to Bangladesh, emphasizing her commitment to her homeland and its citizens. She stated, “Today, I declare openly and unequivocally: I want to return to my homeland and to my people. The question is not whether I will return, but how to do so in a way that protects the interests of our nation and its citizens.”
While the specifics of her return are still being finalized, she indicated her readiness to confront any legal repercussions that may arise from her actions. “I am fully prepared to face any legal consequences, including imprisonment, if that is the price I must pay to continue my political struggle and serve the people of Bangladesh,” she added.
Hasina Denounces Death Sentence as Politically Motivated
Sheikh Hasina has publicly rejected the death sentence issued against her, labeling the verdict as ‘politically motivated and unjust.’ Hasina criticized the government that took power in her absence, describing it as ‘unconstitutional’ and driven by ‘vengeful intent.’ She dismissed the trial and its outcome as a ‘sham.’ Despite the Awami League’s current prohibition from active politics in Bangladesh, Hasina expressed her determination to remain politically engaged. ‘The Awami League is the party that led Bangladesh to independence and has been the guardian of our nation’s democratic aspirations,’ she stated. Hasina is actively working to strengthen the party’s organization and reconnect with supporters throughout the country.
Hasina said she expected the Bangladeshi justice system to apply the law fairly in her case. “Throughout my life, I have steadfastly upheld the principles of law and justice,” she said, pointing to the trial of those accused of assassinating her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and other members of her family. “I expect the same fair application of the law in my own case,” she said, while demanding “full legal protection” of her rights during any judicial proceedings.
