The Election Commission of India has dismissed claims that its members expressed concerns about the panel’s decisions. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commission emphasized that ‘internal checks-and-balances are standard’ in a multi-member constitutional body. This clarification comes in response to a report suggesting dissent among the members regarding their decision-making processes.
Election Commission Clarifies Decision-Making Process
The Election Commission (EC) has issued a press note clarifying that while its three members may express individual views and suggestions during discussions, all final decisions are made unanimously. The EC emphasized that any operational queries raised by Commissioners during the draft stage should not be interpreted as conclusive decisions.
The press note stated, “Differing views and observations are a normal part of deliberation in any institution. They are a part of the decision-making process before a final decision is taken.” Furthermore, it highlighted that every officer within the Commission is encouraged to contribute suggestions aimed at enhancing the electoral system.
