Ladakh’s five new districts are set to get elected local councils, in a move that will expand the region’s grassroots governance beyond Leh and Kargil.
Election Dates Not Announced Yet While the election process is set to begin, no election dates have been announced yet. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Thursday approved the notification for the creation of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDCs) in all seven districts of the Union Territory. The councils are intended to give local representatives a greater role in development planning and administration in their respective districts.
The Ladakh administration said elections to the newly constituted councils will be held in due course, after a formal notification is issued under Section 8 of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils Act, 1997.
Mr Saxena said in a post on X that with the notification now in place, the process for elections to these councils would begin in due course. The administration says the councils will help bring decision-making closer to people and allow local priorities to have a greater role in district-level planning and development.
