The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced updated quality, safety, and event-management guidelines for national highway projects that have recently been inaugurated. These guidelines include provisions for independent audits of significant projects and mandate more thorough inspections once the highways are opened to traffic.
Delhi–Dehradun Expressway Faces Damage After Inauguration
The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April, has recently suffered significant damage. Following intense rainfall, the expressway developed potholes, cracks, and even experienced a cave-in. This deterioration has raised concerns about the infrastructure’s durability shortly after its opening.
NHAI Implements New Audit Measures for Major Infrastructure Projects
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a new policy circular that supersedes an earlier addendum from October 2025. Under the updated guidelines, major infrastructure projects, including greenfield expressways and high-speed corridors with capital costs exceeding ₹2,500 crore, will now require an independent audit. This audit will be conducted by reputable third-party entities or prestigious institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The evaluation will focus on assessing the potential traffic impact upon opening, as well as addressing drainage and related concerns.
Additionally, the NHAI has recommended that the number of officials attending functions be limited to 500. Event preparations must also be finalized at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled program.
